The Ups & Downs of Racing

Posted on: 28th May 2017

we have had a very much up and down week. INDULGED and ADJECTIVE won their races nicely and still look to be improving. MAZZINI & ZEST two very nice horses at home did not show what we see at home on the racecourse this week. HE'S MY BOY every now again surprises us all by running an inspired race and winning but they are few and far between and unfortunately yesterday was not one. He runs well at the Newmarket July course and the main aim is for him to run in the Greys Race.

INDULGED who took a long time to come to herself this year and was showing very little in the spring has suddenly blossomed and won nicely on the rain soaked ground at Doncaster last Saturday. She is a big filly and one that James has always had a soft spot for as he has had a lot of the family and she looks as if she just needed the time and some good weather to come to herself.

ADJECTIVE was bought out of Andre Fabres yard at The Tattersalls December Sales last year. She will eventually end up as a broodmare in Australia. Her full sister is multiple Gp1 winner in France and the USA, Proviso and half sister to the French Champion Older Horse of 2010 Byword (Peintre Celebre). I believe that Mrs Fabre told Badgers Bloodstock that she would win if kept in training and she was correct. She needed every yard of the eleven and half furlongs and was doing all her best work at the finish. She is a big athletic filly who looks to be improving all the time.

We have had a few seconds this week. First of all we had PTARMIGAN RIDGE having his first race at Doncaster on Saturday evening. He has been dogged with problems which we hope he is over now but he is not a good mover but has the heart of a lion. We were very lucky that Doncaster had the huge downpour before racing and that helped him hugely. A furlong from home he was at least ten lengths behind the leader when the penny must have dropped and he flew to get within a neck of the winner Alaadel. It is quite possible he would have won in another two strides. He is a half brother to DONT STARE & FLORISS both trained at Pegasus and both got better with age. He is one of the horses woned by owned by the FRED ARCHER RACING.

REGICIDE was beaten fairly and squarely at Kempton by a well handicapped horse in Wadigor who had won his first two races very easily. ARCTIC ANGEL ran a very game race to just got pipped on the line to be beaten a nose . HIGHER POWER put up a personal best to finish second to Big Orange in the Gp3 Henry ll beaten five lengths. This was HIGHER POWERS first foray into Group races and on ground that was not ideal as he would have preferred a bit more give. He was not disgraced to be beaten by a multiple Gp2 winner on equal terms. The yard was delighted with his performance.

KNIGHT OWL an old friend in the yard here ran very well with George Wood riding to finish third beaten one and a quarter lengths at Ripon in what was his first race of the year.

Racing is a great leveller and where we have horses that have run well we have had also had some disappointments as well. MAZZINI and ZEST have always looked very nice horses at home but they both ran below par again. They both come from families that have done very well for the yard and their owners and it is disappointing. MAZZINI went to Goodwood and ran no sort of race. ZEST went to Ireland for a Gp2 which looked ambitious but it did not look a hot race and the thought was she might squeeze some black type. She ran particularly badly at Haydock last year when the conditions were atrocious and she had similar conditions at The Curragh and ran the same sort of race. I am so sad for the members of Elite Racing as they and us have held her in high esteem. She definitely has a lot of ability and occasionally we see it on the racecourse and then she goes and disappoints.

Last Sunday we had 270 members of Elite Racing on their Sunday visit to the yard. We always enjoy having them as everyone is so appreciative. James put on a parade of horses which always goes down very well. There are always a lot of the lads about to answer questions. Although we dont allow the horses to be touched they can get quite close to them. The weather was amazing and everyone was in great form and the morning was a huge success. We have another one at the end of June but it is a weekday one and doesn't last quite as long as the members have a lunch and racing to go to.

We had our monthly FRED ARCHER RACING morning on Friday and again it was a beautiful morning. THE TIN MAN was looking great out first lot. Breakfast was good followed by second lot where we saw PTARMIGAN RIDGE who has had a very easy week, LORD GEORGE, MASTER ARCHER and MAGICAL DREAMER. After coffee and cakes we headed out for third lot where it was getting very hot out on the heath. We saw all four two year olds SOCIETY PRINCE, SPANISH ARCHER, EXCELLERATION & THE PINOT KID. Everyone seems to get very involved with all the horses regardless of having a share in them or not.

We have MAGICAL DREAMER running on Tuesday in a hood for the first time. Other runners could be PERMISSION, RAINING STARS (a full brother to STAR STORM), ENVISAGING, CAPE TO CUBA and GOTHIC EMPIRE if conditions suit.
Long term entries are The Diamond Jubilee for THE TIN MAN and LORD GEROGE is going to try two miles for the first in The Northumberland Plate.
