Exhausting but Exhilarating

Posted on: 17th Apr 2016

The week started watching the horses "Breeze" prior to being sold after racing on Tuesday and Wednesday. It meant James had to spend quite a bit of time looking at them back at the sales paddock. We have been lucky in the past buying at "The Breeze Ups" and last year bought SAM MISSILE who won his one and only race very nicely. In the past Anthony Stroud & James together found SOCIETY ROCK, SIR GERRY and a little while ago POLAR BEN all Group winners.

Breakfast on Tuesday was a very jolly affair. Choc Thornton,Gerard Tumelty and Dan Muscutt came in having been out with SAM MISSILE earlier. They also saw SILCA WINGS. Julian and Sarah Richmond Watson here to see their nice colt COLUMN and his year younger brother POSEUR, Nigel & Carolyn Elwes have taken a share in MAGICAL DREAMER and they saw her go nicely second lot, Mark Weinfeld and his sister Helena had their three horses SPEEDY BOARDING, SLEEPLESSINSEATTLE and RETURN ACE out second lot. SPEEDY BOARDING looks great, poor RETURN ACE has had a terrible time with her sinus's but hopefully is on the mend and SLEEPLESSINSEATTLE is looming up for her first race. Sally Ann Grassick who for several years has presented racing in France, rode out for two days.

Vivian Tang and her fiancee Tony represented her father when NOBLE STAR ran in the seven furlong maiden later in the afternoon. The yards only runner of the week. We were all delighted with his run where he finished fourth doing all his best work in the last furlong. Vivien & Tony came back to the yard to see him back in his box. David & Francis Russell who have been owners in the yard since 1990 are now involved with the FRED ARCHER RACING horses, THE TIN MAN, LORD GEORGE and the two year old PTARMIGAN RIDGE and liked what they saw when they came to see them after racing.

The evening took us to The Jockey Club Rooms to have dinner with Catherine Wills and the judges of The Martin Wills Young Writers Awards. I had a great draw with Sean Magee, racing journalist for The Guardian on one side and Leo Powell who among many other things writes for The Irish Field on the other. It was a very interesting and fun evening.

Phillipa Cooper (Normandie Stud) has very kindly sent us a filly she bought out of training last year called PRINCESSE EVA as she is a half sister to Covert Love and could be a nice filly to breed from eventually. She was running over an inappropriate trip last year and we will be trying to get her to settle in order that she gets a trip this year. She has done very well recently and hopefully she will continue to do so. Phillipa is very kindly sending us two two year olds who are not here yet. She had good news of GALE FORCE, who she bought last year for breeding, is confirmed in foal to FRANKEL.

Olivia Hoare with her advisor, Luke Lillingstone came to see her lovely two year old filly INCHIKHAN who is also quite a character. She looked in good order doing her canters this morning.

Third Lot we had the Martin Wills Award winners looking round the yard and then out on the heath.

James spent the afternoon and evening at Tattersalls having another look at the horses going through the ring later. Unfortunately he wasn't successful in purchasing and left empty handed. It seems everyone liked the same horses and they went for a fortune.

Thursday was quiet until the evening. We started FRED ARCHER RACING at the end of 2013 when we bought our first two horses at the yearling sales. They were THE TIN MAN and PRESTO BOY they were followed by LORD GEORGE in 2014 and last autumn we bought MASTER ARCHER, PTARMIGAN RIDGE and our first filly MAGICAL DREAMER. We sold PRESTO BOY last summer. We had our first, what we hope will be an annual dinner, at The Packhorse Inn at Moulton. There were 38 of us and the evening turned out to be a huge success. We had lots of fun, plenty of delicious wine and a superb dinner and were well looked after by the staff at The Packhorse.

Nobody jibbed next morning to see THE TIN MAN and LORD GEORGE do their usual two canters first lot. It was not nice weather but the two horses cheered us all up. Luckily we were able to head back to The Packhorse for a delicious breakfast before heading out into even worse weather to see MASTER ARCHER, PTARMIGAN RIDGE and MAGICAL DREAMER.

We had been looking forward to running HIGHER POWER and ARTHENUS both who have done particularly well over the winter, at Newbury on Saturday. Unfortunately it was cancelled but James did not want to run either of them at Chelmsford City.

This coming week it looks as if the only possible runners are REGICIDE & TEGARA at Lingfield on Wednesday and COLUMN at Beverley on Friday.

THE TIN MAN was given another entry this week in the Gp2 Weatherbys Irelands Greenlands Stakes on the 21st May.
