Higher & Higher

Posted on: 4th Jul 2017

James first won the Northumberland Plate in 1995 with BOLD GAIT who I believe won with a weight of 9st10ilbs and by four lengths which I believe at the time was a record weight. HIGHER POWER won with one pound less at 9st9lbs. It looked as if TRAVELMATE had won it in 1999 but he had been beaten by the shortest of short heads. It still annoys james now as everytime he watched he always looked the winner. Anyway it is a race he loves and loves to win. It had been the plan for quite a while for HIGHER POWER to go for the Plate rather than The Ascot Gold Cup. if it had been very soft ground at Ascot he might have had a crack at it as Big Orange doesn't like the soft ground and HP doesn't mind it.

HIGHER POWER was bred by James's sister Rose Armstrong who also had his dam LADY STARDUST in training at Pegasus. He is now rated 110 and will be targeted at Black Type races in the future.

LORD GEORGE who was running over two miles for the first time and four furlongs further than he has ever run before ran an absolute blinder. He did not have a good draw at 17 but we did not want to switch him on by chasing him up to et a position as HIGHER POWER did as he would not have got home. He was beautifully switched off but had to go three wide all the way but was still doing all his best work in the final two furlongs and was only beaten a length and a half. He has only ever been out of the first four once and that was when he got keen in Deauville last year. This year he has been so much more relaxed and switched off. The Fred Archer Racing - Bend Or syndicate should have loads more fun with him in the future. He has still only had ten races so still unexposed over two miles.

SAM MISSILE ran an excellent race to finish sixth and he should improve now we know that he has happy over the two miles also.

James, myself, Tom Queally, George Wood & Daniel Muscutt had taken a little plane to Newcastle in order that we could all get to Doncaster in time for the 5.55pm race. Due to the trophy giving and interviews etc it left very little time to get there. The jockeys literally had seconds to spare in the end. We had two runners KING OF NAPLES and PTARMIGAN RIDGE both who finished third.

On Wednesday we have three runners tomorrow (Wednesday 5th July) and certainly at home they all look in good form. ENVISAGING is running in the 5pm 1m Maiden at Thirsk. MOD who improved hugely from her first run to finish second beaten four lengths in her second race is running in the im4f Maiden at Kempton at 7.10pm. REGICIDE is back at Kempton for the 7.40 in the 1m4f Handicap. He is a charming horse and I would love to see him win again.
